Why Most People Suck At Learning New Skills
And the Establish, Improve, Optimize Framework to supercharge your learning
Ever notice how some people seem to master new skills effortlessly...
While others stay stuck in perpetual mediocrity?
Here's the truth:
It's usually NOT because of talent or intelligence.
It's because they're trying to do everything at once.
And that's a recipe for disaster.
See, mastering ANY skill requires you to know exactly where you're at in the process.
And more importantly... what to prioritize RIGHT NOW.
I call this the Establish-Improve-Optimize Framework.
And I'll show you exactly how it works...
Using my own journey of learning to create and sell digital products as an example.
Let's break this down:
Phase 1 Establish
This is where most people screw up.
They try to be perfect right out the gate.
But when you're establishing yourself with ANY skill...
You need to focus on the absolute basics.
The foundational stuff that actually matters.
For me, when I started creating digital products...
I didn't worry about fancy websites.
Or professional logos.
Or complex membership platforms.
Instead, I focused on the ONE thing that mattered:
Creating small, valuable products that solved specific problems.
We're talking 6-12 page ebooks...
Sold for $7-17 bucks.
Everything lived on one domain.
Products were in simple subfolders.
(example.com/product-a, example.com/product-b)
But here's what I DID focus on:
Making sure the value was HIGH for the price point
Learning how to identify painful problems people would pay to solve
Delivering solutions that focused on SPEED (because people will always pay to save time)
That's it.
No fancy stuff.
Just the core fundamentals of creating something people actually wanted.
Phase 2: Improve
Once you've established the basics...
THEN you can focus on making things better.
This is where strategy comes into play.
For me, this meant taking those simple frameworks I'd created...
And building them out into full coaching programs.
Adding layers of support.
Creating SOPs and checklists.
Developing systems to remove the constraints my customers were running into.
This phase is about fine-tuning your knowledge until you unconscious competence.
Making your solutions more robust.
Creating more assets.
Developing strategic byproducts.
But notice:
You can't do this until you've ESTABLISHED that your core approach actually works.
Phase 3: Optimize
This is where things get interesting.
In the optimization phase...
You move beyond making things better and you start creating entirely new possibilities.
You're asking questions like:
"How can I do things that have never been before?"
"How can I extend my advantages to create unmatchable value?"
"How can I deliver 2X the value of our competitors... at the same price point?"
THIS is where you nail every detail.
Where you perfect every step of the process.
But here's the thing...
You can't skip straight to optimization.
It's like trying to be a chess grandmaster before you know how the pieces move.
The Big Takeaway
With ANY skill you're trying to master...
You need to know what phase you're in:
Are you establishing the foundations?
Are you improving your existing capabilities?
Are you optimizing and innovating?
You can't do all three at once.
It's impossible.
Each phase requires different priorities.
Different focus points.
And trying to optimize before you've established the basics...
Is why most people stay stuck in perpetual mediocrity.
So take an honest look at where you're at.
What phase are you REALLY in right now?
What should you be focusing on?
And most importantly...
What should you STOP focusing on until you're ready for it?
Because that awareness alone...
Will put you ahead of a lot of other people trying to master the same skill.

P.S. I’m in improvement phase right now with AI. Near the tail end.
Soon I’ll be in the optimization phase.
Meaning I will be inventing breakthrough AI stuff no one else can even imagine.
So follow me close. As soon as I have these solutions, I will share them with you.
Wow jason every time you say something, it helps me understand more and more why some times I was feeling stuck - can’t wait to see what you’re working on!
This, "It's because they're trying to do everything at once" and this, "mastering ANY skill requires you to know exactly where you're at in the process" and this, "And more importantly... what to prioritize RIGHT NOW."
That's been me in a nutshell for some time. I'm finally recognizing my propensities and starting to figure out where I am in the process and what to prioritize RIGHT NOW. I always appreciate what you say, Jason. Thank you for taking the time to continue to share value for free.
